Three Humm-dinger Events!  August 5-7

Join us for a weekend of Hummingbird happenings.  Wild Birds Unlimited is delighted to host Bill Hilton Jr, executive director of Hilton Pond Center for Piedmont Natural History, for three hummdinger events.  Bill is one of the rare scientists in the world authorized to capture and band Ruby-throated Hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris).  Each summer, his famous Hummingbird Mornings  and other presentations delight thousands of hummingbird enthusiasts around the country.

Humm-dinger Event #1 - This event has been cancelled

Friday, August 5th, 9:00 am-3:00 pm

On Friday, August 5th  (9:00 am - 3:00 pm), a special GLOBE/Operation RubyThroat training workshop will be offered for adults--such as environmental educators, birders, gardeners, and especially K-16 teachers--interested in learning how to collect and report observations about Ruby-throated Hummingbird behavior. (Home-school teachers also have found the project very useful.) The workshop includes information on developing a Schoolyard or Backyard Hummingbird Habitat.  There is a $10 fee for the workshop to cover the cost of course materials and lunch. The workshop will be held at the Oak Hollow Lake Marina in High Point.  Advance registration is required.

NOTE to folks working on North Carolina Environmental Education certification: This workshop has been approved as six hours in Criteria I: Instructional Workshops.

Contact Wild Birds Unlimited in High Point for more information.  Phone: (336) 841-2572

Hummingbirds at Decorative FeederHumm-dinger Event #2 - This event has been cancelled

Friday, August 5th, 7 pm

Then on Friday evening at 7 pm, Bill will entertain us with a fascinating slide show presentation entitled, "Hummingbirds: From Your Yard to Costa Rica ... and BACK!"  Learn all about these diminutive feathered friends, their characteristics, life history and behaviors. Bill will also share some amazing discoveries from his research in Central America and  South Carolina. The slide show will be held in the auditorium at the Piedmont Environmental Center in High Point.  Admission is free.  Seating is limited - reservations are required.

Ruby-throated HummingbirdHumm-dinger Event #3

Saturday and Sunday, August 6 & 7, 8:30 am-1:30 pm

Want to learn more about attracting these garden jewels to your yard?  Don't miss Hummingbird Mornings!  Bill will share  loads of information about Ruby-throated Hummingbirds with us during these presentations.  He'll also attempt to capture and band - that's right, put a tiny band on the hummingbird's leg - during the presentations.  Learn why scientists band birds and hear what's been learned so far about hummingbird behaviors.  There will be continuous demonstrations from 8:30 am until 1:30 pm at the Piedmont Environmental Center.  Each demonstration lasts about 45 minutes to an hour.

The Piedmont Bird Club (www.piedmontbirdclub.org) and the T Gilbert Pearson Audubon Society (www.tgpearsonaudubon.org) will be on site with displays, too.  What a great opportunity to talk with other nature lovers!

There will be no charge for the Friday evening slide show presentation or the Hummingbird Mornings presentations on Saturday and Sunday.  However, since seating is limited, advance reservations are required for the slide show and there may be a wait for the banding demonstrations.  Visit us at Wild Birds Unlimited in High Point or call (841-2572) for reservations or more information.
